About the GurkhasSome Gurkha History:Since 1816.Nepalese Gurkhas first gained their legendary reputation for martial skills during the Anglo/Nepalese war, and since 1816 have been serving in the British military, when the Treaty of Segauli declared a perpetual friendship between Britain and Nepal. The relationship was cemented at the time of the Indian Mutiny, when the Gurkhas remained loyal to the Crown and fought alongside British troops against the mutineers. Except for some border disputes with India and Tibet, Nepal has never had any battle with any countries of the world. It was always an independent state and was never ruled by a foreign power. However, it is an interesting fact that the Gurkhas, the mountain people from Nepal, have fought almost all of the major wars of the world in every continent. Gurkha - A legendary name.'Gurkha' is not an English word, but in most dictionaries you can find its meaning. The dictionary describes them as soldiers from the mountains of Nepal serving in the British and Indian armies. During World War lI more than 112,000 Gurkha soldiers fought on the war fronts of Europe and Asia and it was during this time that the Gurkhas became known to the rest of the world as "the bravest of the brave". Of the total 1354 Victoria Cross medals, the highest military honour bestowed by the British Sovereign, Gurkha soldiers have been awarded 13 of them. The Khukuri. There were many legends made by the enemies during the First and Second World Wars about the fierceness of Gurkha soldiers. However, the most recent was reported in 1982 during the war of Britain with Argentina over the Falkland Islands. According to a reporter for the BBC "…the Argentines dropped their rifles and abandoned mortars and machine guns as soon as the Gurkha soldiers marched forward". The Argentine soldiers were mainly afraid of the famous Gurkha knives called the "Khukuri". At one time as many as 6,000 Gurkhas were stationed in the former British colony of Hong Kong. Now their role in the Far East has been reduced to a single battalion serving in Brunei, at the specific request of the Sultan. As a result, former members of the British Army Brigade of Gurkhas are available for employment in civilian contracts in locations throughout the world.
